The European Association for Osseointegration is delighted to announce that its 2024 annual congress will be held in Milan from 24 to 26 October 2024.

The theme will be Details make perfection.The scientific committee has put together an inspiring programme structured around three daily themes. These will focus on ‘The fundamentals’, ‘State of the art – certainties’ and ‘Beyond the limits’.

As always, the congress will bring together experts to debate the latest evidence-based practice, with a strong focus on take-home techniques for daily use in your clinic.

The meeting will continue the EAO’s tradition of partnering with respected local associations, and will share the stage with the Italian Academy for Osseointegration (IAO) and the Italian Society of Periodontology (SIdP). Their well-respected scientific and professional perspectives will form an important additional element of the meeting.

This will be the EAO’s second visit to Italy in a decade following its 2014 congress in Rome. We are looking forward to welcoming you to modern and lively Milan, which offers unique opportunities both socially and culturally.

There are so many reasons to attend this meeting. It will combine a unique mixture of cutting-edge presentations and opportunities to network with distinguished colleagues, while spending time in a beautiful European city. Most importantly, the programme is top-notch, and the speaker lineup represents the best professionals in the field of implant dentistry and related specialities.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Bilal Al-Nawas

Germany, Mainz

Professor Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Bilal Al-Nawas is Chairman of the Department of Oral, Maxillofacial and Plastic Surgery at the J. Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany. He has been Adjunctive Associate Professor at Kyung Hee University School of Dentistry, Seoul, Korea since 2009. Professor Al-Nawas’ major clinical and scientific focus in dental implantology is on clinical studies and basic research. His clinical field of work is compromised patients with risk factors or local bone deficiency, as well as tumor and cleft reconstructions. He has published over 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He sits on the ITI Board of Directors and the ITI Research Committee, is an ITI Fellow and ITI Education Delegate of the ITI Section Germany. He was twice awarded “Best Teacher at the Medical Faculty”. He is Past President of the International Federation of Dental Anesthesiology Societies (IFDAS) and Secretary General of the German Society of Implantology (DGI).

Prof. Dr. Gil Alcoforado DMD, PhD

Portugal, Lissabon

Prof. Gil Alcoforado has dedicated his life to scientific research in period ontology and implant rehabilitation. His career spanning 35 years has been fulfilled with several lecturing positions at some of the most reputable universities in the dental area in Europe and USA. He has also been actively engaged with an intensive social entrepreneurship and volunteering work in oral care, running oral hygiene instruction campaigns to parents and children in countries where help is paramount. In 1985, Dr. Gil Alcoforado became the first periodontist in Portugal. That same year he joined the Philip Dear Foundation and is today the Chairman of the International College of Dentists – European Section. He was also the founder and former president of the Portugese Periodontal Society as well as former President of the European Federation of Periodontology.

Federico Hernández Alfaro MD, DDS, PhD, FEBOMS

Spain, Barcelona

Prof. Hernández-Alfaro studied medicine and dentistry and specialized in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Barcelona, Spain. He obtained his PhD at International University of Catalonia , and is Diplomate by the European Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is currently Chief of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Teknon Medical Center, the largest private facility in Spain. He is also Professor and Chairman of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain). Dr. Hernández Alfaro’s main interest is Orthognathic and Preprosthetic Surgery and has published, and lectured worldwide in these fields.

Dr. Sofia Aroca PhD

France, Paris

With a diverse educational background, having grown up in South America and Europe before moving to Budapest, Hungary, at a young age, she laid the foundation for a distinguished career in dentistry. She completed her high school education in Budapest and proceeded to earn her doctorate degree from Semmelweis University. Her professional journey commenced at the Hospital "La Salpetriere" in Paris, France, in the Maxillo Facial Unit, alongside initiating a post-graduate program in periodontology. This was quickly followed by the establishment of her private practice. In 1996, she solidified her expertise by obtaining a degree in Periodontology and Implantology from the University Paris VII, Paris, France, marking the start of her exclusive practice in these fields. Her commitment to advancing dental science extended beyond her practice, as she engaged in clinical research, teaching, and lecturing internationally. Her academic achievements include earning a PhD from the University of Szeged, Hungary, in 2011, where she was also honored with an honorary professorship in 2012. Her vision for fostering education and research in dentistry materialized in 2018 with the co-creation of a Continuing Education and Clinical Research Center in Paris, France. Recognition of her contributions to the field continued with her election to the Osteology expert council in 2019, highlighting her as a leading figure in periodontology and implantology.

Prof. Dr. Wael Att DDS

United States of America, Boston

Wael Att, DDS, Dr med dent, PhD, is professor and chair of the Department of Prosthodontics at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and a professor of prosthodontics at the University of Freiburg School of Dentistry in Germany. He serves as president of the International Academy for Digital Dental Medicine, past president of the Prosthodontics Group of the International Association for Dental Research as well as president of the Arabian Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. Dr Att is a board-certified prosthodontist from the German Society of Prosthodontics and Biomaterials and an active member of multiple professional organizations, including the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry.

Prof. Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz DDS, MS, PhD

Spain, Madrid

Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz obtained a DDS degree and completed a PhD training program at the University of Granada (Spain), before moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan (USA) where he graduated with an MS degree and a Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Michigan. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Avila-Ortiz has over 10 years of experience as an educator and has worked to advance the profession in numerous institutional committees and scientific organizations. He is a former faculty member at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, where he was the Phillip A. Lainson Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics until 2022. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of The International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry. He has authored more than 100 articles published in peer-reviewed journals and numerous book chapters. He is the co-author of the book TISSUES: Critical Issue in Periodontics and Implant-Related Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (Quintessence Publishing 2022), which has been critically acclaimed within the profession. Dr. Avila-Ortiz is currently a Visiting Professor in the Division of Periodontics at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and a member of Atelier Dental Madrid (Spain), a center for dental excellence where he maintains a private practice limited to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry and is regularly engaged in scholarly and continuing-education activities.

Prof. Dr. Kathrin Becker

Germany, Berlin

Prof. Dr. Kathrin Becker completed her dental studies at the Universities of Greifswald and Göttingen from 2005 to 2013, concluding with her doctoral degree in 2014. In parallel, from 2007 to 2014, she studied Applied Computer Science at the Georg-August-University Göttingen, earning a Bachelor's degree in 2010 and a Master's degree in 2014. After stints in the USA and Switzerland, she began her career in 2014 as a research associate at the Clinic for Orthodontics of the University Hospital Düsseldorf. Since 2018, she has been a specialist in orthodontics, and in 2019, she completed her habilitation on "Computer-Aided Analysis Methods for the Automated Calculation of Bone Remodeling on Titanium Implants" at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. Since 2020, she has served as the senior physician at the Clinic for Orthodontics of the University Hospital Düsseldorf, responsible for the training assistants and the orthodontic director of the interdisciplinary cleft consultation. Prof. Dr. Kathrin Becker assumed the W3 Professorship for Orthodontics at the Charité on October 1st, which also includes the leadership of the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at the Charité Center for Dental, Oral, and Maxillofacial Medicine at the Campus Benjamin Franklin.

Dr. Anne Benhamou

Anne Benhamou is teaching in Dental Implant Therapy and Bone and Soft Tissue Reconstruction at Paris VII University, Department of Oral Implantology. She practises in her private clinics in the centre of Paris and London. She is the Fondator and President of the SNIF (Symposium National d’Implantologie au Féminin). Her clinical research emphasises on esthetic management in Dental Implant Therapy.

Dr. Juan Blanco Carrión DDS, MBBS

Spain, Santiago de Compostela

Prof. Juan Blanco graduated in medicine in 1986 and in stomatology in 1988 – both from the University of Santiago de Compostela. He then moved to Madrid to take a Master’s in Periodontology at the Universidad Complutense, where he also earned his PhD. From 1996 to 2007, he worked as an assistant professor in Periodontology at the Universidad of Santiago de Compostela, where he became Professor and Chairman of Periodontology in 2008. Prof. Blanco was president of the Spanish Society of Periodontology from 2007-2010, Chairman of the ITI Iberian Section from 2010-2016, President of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) (2016-2017) and Past-president of the European Federation of Periodontology (2017-2018). He also served as a member of the ITI Research Committee.

Prof. Dr. Dieter Bosshardt

Dieter Bosshardt is head of the Robert K. Schenk Laboratory of Oral Histology at the School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern, and a private lecturer at the Department of Periodontology and Prosthodontics and the Department of Oral Surgery and Stomatology, University of Bern. His main scientific interests are located in the fields of tooth development, in particular cementogenesis, periodontal tissue regeneration, and healing events associated with dental implants and other biomaterials. He is author and co-author of more than 80 original articles, review articles, case reports, and book chapters. He is a member of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and the Osteology Research Academy (ORA).

Prof. em. Dr. med. dent. Daniel Buser DDS

Daniel Buser, DDS, Prof em Dr med dent, is one of the most experienced international implant surgeons, with 35 years of surgical experience. He is past professor and chairman in the Department of Oral Surgery at the University of Bern in Switzerland and past president of the European Association for Osseointegration, the Swiss Society of Oral Implantology, the Swiss Society of Oral Surgery and Stomatology, and the International Team for Implantology (ITI). He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the ITI Honorary Fellowship and the Morton Amsterdam Award. He has authored and coauthored over 400 publications and is editor of 30 Years of Guided Bone Regeneration (Quintessence, 2021), which was recently published in its third edition. Dr Buser is cofounder of the Buser & Sculean Academy, which offers continuing education courses in periodontology and implant dentistry, and lectures nationally and internationally.

Prof. Dr. Francesco Cairo DDS

Head of the Clinical Research Unit in Periodontology and Periodontal Medicine and Director of the full-time Master Program in Periodontology at the University of Florence, Florence, Italy. He is active member and treasurer of the Italian Society of Periodontology (SIdP). Winner of some prestigious international awards in Periodontology, including the H. Goldman prize from SIdP, the Jaccard prize by the European Federation of Periodontology and R. Earl Robinson Periodontal Regeneration Award by the American Academy of Periodontology.  Primary author of several original publications and referee of the main scientific journals in the field of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry.

Dr. Paolo Casentini

Italy, Milano

Paolo Casentini teaches postgraduate courses in oral implantology and oral surgery at the University of Milan in Italy. He is fellow and chairman of the Italian section of the ITI, an active member of the Italian Academy of Osseointegration (IAO) and a member of SIdP. Paolo Casentini is author or coauthor of several scientific papers about implantology and regenerative surgery published on peer-reviewed international journals. He has contributed as author or coauthor to 10 textbooks about implantology, pre-implant surgery and oral surgery; some of which have been translated in several other languages. He is also coauthor of the ITI Treatment Guide volume 4, which has been translated into 9 languages. His main fields of interest are the surgical and prosthetic aspects of implantology and periodontology in advanced and esthetically demanding cases. He has extensively lectured on these topics during international congresses and courses in 35 different countries.

Tali Chackartchi graduated dentistry in 2002. Prof. Dr. Renato Cocconi MD, DDS, MS

Italy, Parma

Dr. Renato Cocconi is an orthodontist in Parma, Italy where he works at a private clinic that he directs with Dr Raffaini. Dr Cocconi attended a 3 year Postgraduate Program in Orthodontics at the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Milan where he obtained his master’s degree in 1993. He subsequently spent 2.5 years in the United States where he worked in L.F. Andrews Foundation and attended the Roth Williams postgraduate course in from 1991-1993. Since that time Dr Cocconi has been very active in the orthodontic community nationally and internationally. His accomplishments and collaborations worldwide include working with Dr Terry Tanaka at USC, election to the Scientific Committee of the Angle Society and countless invitations to speak internationally for such groups as European Orthodontic Society, AAO, the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and the World Orthodontic Meeting in London in September 2015. He has served as a clinical professor in the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Milan from 1993 to 2008. Currently, Cocconi is active in many organizations including the EOS, AAO, SIDO and the Angle Society of Europe. He will be part of the European Team (with Mauro Fradeani and Mirco Raffaini) selected for the Meeting "USA meets Europe" that takes place in Tegernsee Germany every 4 years, organized by the Seattle Study Group, DGAZ and AIOP.

Dr. Luca Cordaro MD, DDS, PhD

Dr. Luca Cordaro is chair of the Department of Periodontology and Prosthodontics at the Eastman Dental Hospital in Rome. He graduated in Medicine at the University of Roma "La Sapienza" where he also got a degree in Dentistry. He holds a Ph.D. degree and is a certified specialist in oral surgery. He also works, together with his brother, in a private practice founded in 1957 by his father. Dr Cordaro is author or co- author of more than 70 papers published in italian or international journals and has lectured in Europe, Asia, North and South America. In 2007 he won the H. Goldman Prize for Clinical Research of the Italian Society of Periodontology. He is author of different book chapters and coauthor of the books "The SAC Classification in Implant Dentistry" and ITI Treatment Guide 7 published by Quintessence Publishing. He is active member of the Italian Society of Osseointegration and Fellow of the ITI (International Team for Implantology). In the ITI he serves as member of the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Study Club Committee and Chairrman for the Italian Section. He has been elected in the EAO Board in 2010 and serves as Chair of the Congress committee and Secretary General. His professional interests are Periodontology, Implantology and Oral surgery with a special interest regarding the reconstructive treament of alveolar atrophies.

Dr. Luca De Stavola DMD

Italy, Padova

Luca De Stavola covers the position of Visiting professor of Periodontology and lecturer for the Osseointegrated implantology Master of the University of Padua (Italy). Graduaded in 2001 at the University of Padua (Italy) dental school, Luca De Stavola gets his specialization in Oral Surgeryin 2007 at the “Privatzahnklinik Schloss Schellenstein” (Westfalen-Lippe, Germany) under the guidance of Prof. F. Khoury; in the same year he concludes the Master of Oral Medicine in implantology at the Westfalischen Wilhelms University in Münster (Germany). An internationally renowned speaker for his interdisciplinary approach between periodontology and restorative surgery, Luca De Stavola is author of several research peer reviewed papers, and is an active SIO (Italian Association of Osseointegrated Implantology) and EAO (European Academy of Osseointegration) member, and is widely considered one of the most emerging Italian speakers in bone reconstruction and soft tissue management. His latest publications and courses focus on computer-guided bone surgery and optimal soft tissue management.

Dr. Nuno Sousa Dias DDS, MOrth

Portugal, Vila Nova de Gaia

Dr. Nuno Sousa Dias, DDS, MOrth, received his degree in Dentistry from Universidade Fernando Pessoa (Porto) in 2007. In the same year, he created and registered a Smile's Analysis named SAEF® - Smile's Aesthetic Evaluation Form®. From 2008 to 2012, he completed the full-time Orthodontic Postgraduate Program at Tel Aviv University (ISRAEL). In 2010, he was awarded the 1st prize at the 4th Scientific Research International Competition of the Spring Meeting of the EAED (European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry) in London (UK). He was elected ambassador for EPSOS (European Postgraduate Students Orthodontic Society) for Portugal and Israel in 2011 and 2012. In 2013, he was awarded by SEDO (Sociedad Española de Ortodoncia) with a fund to attend the AGE (Advanced Graduate Education) Didactic Courses at the Department of Orthodontics of HSDM (Harvard School of Dental Medicine). He is a member of several national and international dental and orthodontic scientific organizations. Since 2013, he has been practicing limited orthodontics at his own private clinic NSD-DENTISTRY in Portugal. He also collaborates with multidisciplinary teams in Belgium, Germany, and Istanbul. Additionally, he is an international lecturer in the field of Orthodontics and Smile's esthetics.

Dr. Egon Euwe

Dr. Egon Euwe obtained his degree in 1982 at the University of Utrecht (Holland). Since 1986 his main interests in the dental field have been periodontics and oral implantology. He followed post-graduate courses under Dr. Sascha Jovanovic at UCLA. He became a member of the UCLA European Study Club, and in January of 1997, this group presented him an award for the "Best Clinical-Scientific Presentation". He and his prosthodontist and lab technician won first and second price in two categories in the international competition of the "Parallelometro d'oro 1999" (Dental Labor Journal). He is a frequent international lecturer and co-author of several scientific publications. Dr Euwe was involved in the Department of Periodontics of the University of Milan at the San Paolo Hospital where he did clinical research on resorption of newly formed bone. He worked at the Department of Periodontology with Prof. Massimo Simion at Milan University. Active member of European Association for Osseointegration (EAO), Active member of European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED) and of Italian Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (IAED), Global Faculty member of Global Institute for Dental Education (gIDE).

ZTM Vincent Fehmer BDT, MDT

Switzerland, Geneva

Vincent Fehmer, MDT, received his dental technical education and degree in Stuttgart, Germany, before completing fellowships in Great Britain and the United States in Oral Design–certified dental technical laboratories. After working several years in such a laboratory in Berlin, he received his MDT degree and became the chief dental technician at the Clinic for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics in Zurich, Switzerland. Since 2015, he has been a dental technician at the Clinic for Fixed Prosthodontics and Biomaterials in Geneva, Switzerland. He also runs his own laboratory in Lausanne. Mr Fehmer is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology, an active member of the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED), and a member of the Oral Design group as well as the European Association of Dental Technology (EADT) and the German Society of Esthetic Dentistry (DGÄZ). He is a sought-after international speaker and has received many honors for his work, including the Kenneth Rudd Award from the American Prosthodontic Society. He has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals within the field of fixed prosthodontics and digital dental technology, contributed to many books, and recently coauthored the book Fixed Restorations: A Clinical Guide to the Selection of Materials and Fabrication Technology with Irena Sailer and Bjarni Pjetursson. Mr Fehmer also serves as editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry,  editor-in-chief of Quintessence of Dental Technology, and Section Editor for the International Journal of Prosthodontics.

Graduated cum laude in 1986 in Medicine and Surgery at the Univ. of Trieste, specialized with honors in Dentistry in 1989 at the Univ. of Pisa. Dr. Fonzar has been directing the “E.Fonzar” Friulian Dental Clinic in Campoformido (UD) since 1996. Periodontology, implantology and prosthetics are the specializations to which Dr. Fonzar has dedicated his activity, becoming one of the leading European experts. Active member and Past President of SIDP, member AIOP and Int. Dr. German Gallucci received his Doctorate in Dental Medicine (Dr. Med. Dent.) from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He attended a postdoctoral training at the Department of Fixed Prosthodontics and Occlusion, School of Dental Medicine, University of Geneva where he later became a full-time faculty at the same department. Dr Gallucci also received a Ph.D. from the Free University of Amsterdam.  In 2007, he established a new Postgraduate Education Program in Oral Implantology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He is currently department chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Sciences, and also oversees the Harvard Dental Center as its executive director. Dr. Gallucci participates in lectures, seminars, practical courses and table clinics at national and international meetings and symposia. He has authored scientific publications in the field of Fixed Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry and his work has been mostly published in international peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Gallucci serves as an editorial board member for Journal of Dental Research (JDR), Clinical Oral Implants Research (COIR), and International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants (IJOMI). He is a fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI), Switzerland, an active member of the Academy of Osseointegration and the European Academy of Osseointegration.

Dr. Oscar Gonzalez-Martin DDS, PhD, MSc

Spain, Madrid

Dr. Gonzalez-Martin received the DDS degree from University of Seville in 1999 and was appointed as an assistant professor at the same university from 1999 to 2005, while also working in a private practice. In 2005, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (USA) to obtain an MS degree in Graduate Periodontics and Periodontal-Prosthesis in 2009 from University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). He received the Arnold Weisgold’s Director’s Award. He joined the UPenn faculty as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in 2009 and he currently keeps the position. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontics in 2009. In 2010, he received a scholarship to join to the Fixed Prosthodontic and Occlusion Department at the University of Geneva School of Dental Medicine. In 2015, he obtained an International PhD at the University of Seville. Currently, he serves as Editor-in-Chief for The International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry. Prof Mariano Sanz MD

Mariano Sanz is professor and chair of periodontology at the University Complutense of Madrid (Spain) and a professor in the faculty of Odontology at the University of Oslo (Norway). He graduated in medicine in 1981 from the University Complutense of Madrid, from which he received a degree in stomatology in 1983 and where he qualified as a Doctor of Medicine in 1985. He received his speciality in periodontology from the Universtiy of Califormia in Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1987. He has received honorary doctorates from the University of San Sebastian in Santiago (Chile), the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) and the University of Coimbra (Portugal). Since 2005, Prof Sanz has been chair of the ETEP research group on the aetiology and therapy of periodontal diseases, whose main lines of research are oral microbiology, bacterial-host interactions, and antimicrobial approaches in the treatment of gingivitis and periodontitis. The research group has conducted clinical trials to measure the efficacy of different approaches to periodontal regeneration surgical protocols using dental implants, and therapeutic approaches to treat peri-implantitis. Prof Sanz has published 230 articles in scientific journals, written 50 book chapters, and has participated as an invited speaker at more than 200 scientific events in the last five years. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology and Evidence-Based Dental Practice and a member of the editorial boards of various other dental journals. He has been awarded the Jens Waerhaug Research Prize by the Scandinavian Society of Periodontology (1984), the Outstanding Service Award from the International Association for Dental Research (2015) and the IADR Straumann Award in Periodontal Regenerative Medicine (2015). He is a member of the executive committee of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and chair of its workshop committee. Prof Dr med dent Hendrik Terheyden is head physician at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Helios Hospital in Kassel, Germany. Hendrik Terheyden studied dentistry from 1983 to 1989 at the University of Kiel. In 1989, he was a staff physician for the Navy in Flensburg. From 1989-1992 he studied human medicine at the University of Kiel. In 1993 he became a specialist in oral surgery and in 1997 a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery with the additional title of plastic surgery (1999). In 1999 he completed his PhD (Habilitation) at the University of Kiel. He received the Wassmund Prize of the German Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (DGMKG). In 2004, he became an adjunct professor at Kiel University. From 2009 to 2012, he was president of the German Society for Implantology, and from 2017 to 2019, he was Chairman of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Working Group of the German Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (DGZMK). Since 2006, Prof Terheyden has been section editor of the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, and since 2012 he has been editor in chief of the International Journal of Implant Dentistry. Since 2021, he has served on the board of the Working Group of Senior Hospitalists of the German Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
