Methods for removing crowns and bridges: Preserving the restoration

There are many ways to approach the removal of a cast restoration. In deciding on the most appropriate method, the clinician's primary concern should be to prevent damage to the supporting tissues and to minimize trauma to the patient. The difficulties encountered in meeting this responsibility relate to the practicalities of applying potentially injurious forces in a controlled and predictable manner. Although there is an inherent risk factor associated with all crown removal methods, this paper describes the safest methods of preserving crowns during removal. In addition practical hints are introduced with the emphasis on patient safety and reducing the risk factor to the supporting tissues.
