CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Manufacturing), i.e. digitalised planning and manufacturing, has already established itself as a serious option for the production of various orthodontic appliances. With regard to removable orthodontic appliances, however, studies on CAD/CAM manufacturing are still limited to individual reports. Among such removable appliances, the functional regulator (FR3) by Fränkel has a special role due to its complex fabrication requiring specially trained technicians. Therefore, its spread has so far been limited. As an alternative concept, the FR3 is now being manufactured using CAD/CAM technology (CAD-FR3) and used for the treatment of class-III patients in our clinic. Thus, the present article aims to provide an overview of the fabrication of the CAD-FR3, its technical testing and our clinical experience to date. In addition, we present examples of other removable orthodontic CAD/CAM appliances that are constantly being developed and tested in our clinic.
