Focusing on prevention and identifying and decreasing risk factors are important aspects of managing the epidemic of peri-implant diseases. However, many clinicians are faced with patients who already have signs of inflammatory disease in varying degrees of severity. Treatment of peri-implant mucositis involves addressing the etiologic factors causing local inflammation, as well as improving self-performed oral hygiene and enrolling the patient in a personalized maintenance program. On the other hand, managing peri-implantitis can be very challenging. Peri-implantitis therapy may involve nonsurgical, nonreconstructive, reconstructive, and—in some instances—explantation procedures. The aim of this report is to provide clinical recommendations and reference flowcharts to manage peri-implant diseases and related complications on the basis of expert opinions and the scientific evidence discussed at the 2024 AO/AAP Consensus on Prevention and Management of Peri-implant Diseases and Conditions.
