This book has it all, and can truly be considered the definitive implant prosthodontic textbook. Like its predecessor, it functions as both a textbook for students and a dental reference for practitioners. The authors aim to provide a prosthodontic perspective to the various aspects of implant treatment, from the biologic mechanisms of osseointegration to implant design and configuration, to maintenance and management of complications. Organized into four sections, the book systematically takes the reader through the foundational principles of implant dentistry, to evaluation and restoration through a variety of clinical situations, and into more specialized topics and treatment scenarios. In addition, a downloadable illustrated glossary is available for easy reference. Emerging digital technologies and materials used to design and fabricate implant prostheses are an important focus, as are implant positioning, angulation, and spacing for each situation. Designs of implant-assisted overdentures are described in detail as well as the various bone and soft tissue enhancement procedures currently in use, particularly in patients with unfavorable periodontal biotypes. The book also focuses on the importance of interdisciplinary treatment in providing safe and effective results, making it a must-have to complete any dental library.

John Beumer III, DDS, MS, received his DDS from the University of California, San Francisco in 1967. He subsequently completed his postgraduate training in oral medicine there in 1970 before continuing with postgraduate training in prosthodontics at UCLA. He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Division of Advanced Prosthodontics at the UCLA School of Dentistry and was formerly chair of that division. Dr Beumer has published extensively in the scientific literature, including Maxillofacial Rehabilitation (Quintessence, 2011) and Fundamentals of Implant Dentistry (Quintessence, 2015–2016).
Robert F. Faulkner, DDS, graduated from The Ohio State University in 1980. Following a 1-year hospital residency, he practiced general dentistry in northwest Ohio until 1990, when he returned to an advanced graduate residency program in prosthodontics at the UCLA School of Dentistry. Dr. Faulkner received his certificate in prosthodontics in 1992 as well as a certificate in maxillofacial prosthetics in 1993. In addition, he received full training through the UCLA Implant Center during his three year residency training programs. He has lectured extensively on several aspects of prosthodontics and implant dentistry, both nationally and internationally. Dr Faulkner resides in Cincinnati, Ohio where he maintains a private practice limited to fixed and removable prosthodontics, maxillofacial prosthetics, and implant prosthodontics.
Kumar C. Shah, BDS, MS, is a professor of clinical dentistry and a board-certified prosthodontist and maxillofacial prosthodontist in the Division of Advanced Prosthodontics at UCLA. He earned his dental degree from the National University of Singapore and his Master of Science degree and a certificate in prosthodontics at The Ohio State University, after which he completed maxillofacial prosthetics fellowship training and a translational science certificate at UCLA. Dr Shah is the Director of the Graduate Prosthodontics residency program at UCLA, Advanced Prosthodontics and Implantology Preceptorship Programs as well as Director of the Faculty Group Dental practice at UCLA. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, a Fellow of the Academy of Prosthodontics, Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists, and Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI). He has been on Board of Directors for several nonprofit dental organizations. In addition to being a coeditor of both editions of Fundamentals of Implant Dentistry, Vol 1, he is also a member of the editorial review board of the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and has been an ad-hoc reviewer in multiple peer-reviewed journals. Dr Shah currently practices in the UCLA faculty group dental practice. He practices all areas of restorative and esthetic dentistry (fixed and removable prosthodontics), including full-mouth rehabilitation and reconstruction with a special emphasis on implant prosthodontics.
Benjamin Wu, DDS, PhD, received his dental degree from the University of Pacific, his postgraduate training in prosthodontics at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and PhD in Materials Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has succeeded Dr John Beumer as Chair of the Division of Advanced Prosthodontics, and he is also Director of the Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology. He is Former Chair of the Department of Bioengineering in the UCLA School of Engineering, and he holds formal appointments in the Departments of Materials Science & Engineering and Orthopedic Surgery. Dr Wu has published over 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers and over 40 patents, and he received continuous National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for his innovative research. His citations rank him among the top 2% of scientists according to Stanford‘s standardized citation metrics across all scientific disciplines. He is Fellow of the Academy of Prosthodontics and enjoys patient care in the UCLA Faculty Group Dental Practice.
